Father James P. Connolly    

     Father James P. Connolly, who served for 24 years at St. John the Evangelist parish in Manhattan and earlier was a pastor and administrator of parishes in the Bronx, died Jan. 26, 2020. He was 94. Born in New York City, He studied for the priesthood at Cathedral College Prep in Manhattan and St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, Yonkers, NY and was ordained in 1954.

Assignments were as follows:

Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph, New Paltz, 1954-1958
Chaplain in the U.S. Navy, 1958-1963.
Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Elmsford, 1963-1969.
Appointed Regional Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Office in 1969. 
Parochial Vicar at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Manhattan, 1969 -1978.
Pastor at SS. Peter and Paul, 1979-1987
Administrator of St. Adalbert’s parish, 1987-1990.

Parochial Vicar at St. John the Evangelist, Manhattan 1990-2000. 
Appointed Associate Spiritual Director of the Archdiocesan, Union of the Holy Name Society in 1990. 
Appointed Special Assistant for vocations to Cardinal John O’Connor in 1992.
Senior Priest at St. John the Evangelist from 2000 until 2014, when he retired.

Cardinal Dolan will offer the Funeral Mass Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 348 E. 55th St. Father Brian E. McWeeney, Director of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the archdiocese, will deliver the homily. Burial will take place at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, L.I.
